The BEAR Adventure
Race includes a series of stages that must be completed within the
race time limits. Some Teams enter The CUB with a 5-hour time limit
or The BEAR (10-hour limit) and are provided with Stage
Instruction sheets to begin the race. As they complete each stage, Teams are given the next set of
instructions. There is usually an intermediate
cut-off time at 7-9 hours, after which Teams are not given the next set of
instructions that would clearly cause the Team to finish after the race
time limit of 10 hours. At the beginning of the races, both CUB and
BEAR Teams may be using the same instructions. Of course, Teams in The
BEAR receive more tasks and longer stages to accomplish.
|
|
In order to win The BEAR, a
Team must complete the most stages in the shortest time and stay within
the time limit.

|
For
the first time in the history of The BEAR,
|
the
race was won by an all-woman team, Sara McLarty and Misty Becerra.
|
We
congratulate them on a wonderful racing accomplishment!!

Possible Stages for Teams in The BEAR Adventure Race
2008:
- RUN - Teams run/trek through the woods to a checkpoint for
info and return to Main Transition for the next Stage.
- PADDLE -- Portage to and Paddle
on St Johns River -- BEAR racers locate 3 checkpoints and record
information at each turn location. With light winds from the northeast on race day, this
was a beautiful morning for paddling, except for the team that
capsized their boat....
- BIKE - Cycle on trails of Bayard Conservation Area -- wet and
dry biking on forest trails, plus locating two checkpoints with logic
puzzles. An intermediate Check Point at the Area 3 Trailhead included
target practice with a wrist rocket slingshot that fired tennis balls:
hit the target and avoid the tire change penalty.
- TREK - Three checkpoints along
route through woods or along some trails. Route to be chosen by
Teams.
- BIKE 2 -- Locate and record info at two checkpoints in Bayard
Conservation Area one on the water and one near the west end of the
Shands Bridge -- though all movement needed to be inside BCA and WITH
the Team's bikes..
