Stages for Teams in The BEAR Adventure Race
2010:
- The BEAR and The Cub -- Start -- both races started together
with a quick logic puzzle about an explorer crossing a river with men
and animals. The various abilities of the teams completing their mental
challenge helped to spread out the congestion during the short portage
and at the launch area.
- PADDLE -- Portage to and Paddle
on St Johns River -- BEAR racers locate 3 check points on the east
side of the river at Trout Creek Park and record information at each
turn location. With light winds from the southeast on race day, this
was a beautiful morning for paddling. The only exception was for the
Race Officials, who had some difficulty with the power on the escort Jet
Ski. Fortunately for everyone, the wind was trailing the return paddle
for the BEAR racers. Upon returning to the Main Transition, Teams
dropped off their boats and climbed the BEAR Wall and cargo net
challenge for the first time.
- TREK - Find checkpoints along
routes through woods or along some trails. Route to be chosen by
Teams. Teams were given a choice of using one bike per team to improve
speed. Some teams needed to carry more fluids and will likely remember
next time. At a Check Point in Zone/Area 3, racers encountered a puzzle
that gave them a break from the heart-pounding and required a mental
focus. After returning to HQ, a Check Point at the Main Transition
included target practice with a wrist rocket slingshot that fired tennis
balls: hit the target and avoid the tire change penalty. Some teams also
needed to complete the slack line challenge.
- BIKE - Cycle on trails of Bayard Conservation Area -- biking on forest trails
in all zones of the Conservation Area, plus locating four to five checkpoints.
Racers confirmed their navigation skills with a challenge at Area 3
Trailhead CP, that called on them to determine some coordinates in a
logic puzzle before heading back to the Main Transition for the FINISH.

Possible Stages for Teams in The CUB Adventure Race
2010:
- The BEAR and The Cub -- Start -- both races started together
with a quick logic puzzle about an explorer crossing a river with men
and animals. The various abilities of the teams completing their mental
challenge helped to spread out the congestion during the short portage
and at the launch area.
- PADDLE -- Portage to and Paddle
on St Johns River -- CUB racers locate a check point on the west side
of the river at Research Wells near Davis Landing. Record information at
this turnaround location. With light winds, this
was a beautiful morning for paddling. Fortunately for everyone, the
wind was trailing the return paddle for the racers. Upon returning to
the Main Transition, Teams dropped off their boats and climbed the BEAR
Wall and cargo net challenge.
- TRAIL-FREE TREK - Find checkpoints along
routes through woods but not allowed to travel along any trails. Route to be chosen by
Teams. Some teams discovered that it could be really slow moving
through what they termed "green razors" -- the palmetto scrub. After
returning to HQ, a Check Point at the Main Transition included target
practice with a wrist rocket slingshot that fired tennis balls: hit the
target and avoid the tire change penalty. Some teams also needed to
complete the slack line challenge.
- BIKE - Cycle on trails of Bayard Conservation Area -- biking on forest trails
in several zones of the Conservation Area, plus locating two key checkpoints.
Racers confirmed their navigation skills with a challenge at Area 3
Trailhead CP, that called on them to determine some coordinates in a
logic puzzle before heading back to the Main Transition for the FINISH.
